Marriott International plans to help you share a hotel room with Alexa
Marriott has a novel idea to spice up your next stay in one of its luxury properties: a roommate by the name of Alexa. On Tuesday, Ecommerce giant Amazon announced a partnership with the world’s largest luxury hotelier to add Amazon Echo smart speakers to “a select number of rooms” giving guests the opportunity to maximize the convenience of their stay by using its voice assisted virtual personal assistant Alexa.

Alexa will enable people to order room service, turn on the lights, set alarms, notify housekeeping, ask for hotel information, call the front desk, play music and “other typical Alexa functions.” Guests don’t need to be Amazon customers in order to use these features, but the company is eventually planning to add functionality that lets people sign in with their Amazon accounts to play their own playlists, or listen to their audiobooks.
Users needn’t be concerned over privacy, either. In an FAQ, Amazon has said that hotels “can’t listen to what you said to Alexa or what she said back.” And, of course, guests can always unplug “her” if they don’t fancy an overnight companion.
As of yet, Marriott hasn’t revealed how many rooms will get Echo speakers, but the company did say that it will be rolling them out over its entire family of brands, including Marriott Hotels, Westin Hotels, St. Regis, Aloft, and Autograph Collection Hotels.
