Dior names new menswear chief: Kim Jones, formerly of Vuitton

Christian Dior Couture, one of the biggest names in fashion, has named Kim Jones, a designer and art director who previously worked at Vuitton, as head of its new menswear range. Jones is known for blending high-fashion concepts with streetwear influences, and the company will be hoping that his eclectic approach can return it to the top of the industry. Dior, like Vuitton, is owned by luxury conglomerate LVMH, so the transition should be a relatively easy one for Jones.

Jones will be replacing Kris Van Assche, who announced on Monday that he was stepping down as Dior’s creative director. The appointment is new CEO Pietro Beccari’s first significant move, and comes amid a wider reshuffling at the top of the fashion world.

Dior reached its modern zenith in 2007 under Hedi Slimane, whose skinny jeans and suits “set the menswear agenda” at the time. But in the years since, the company has lost ground to other big brands like Gucci. Jones may be a corrective to that.

He is one of the foremost British designers working in French luxury, and is an alumnus of Central St. Martins art school in London. At Vuitton, he was able to command attention through a skillful use of social media and “playful riffs on Louis Vuitton’s logo.” Dior will be hoping to see some of the same magic play out over its own menswear brand over the coming year.
